Context

Studio Vetro invited us to take part in a group digital art exhibition.

"Bloom" is the series that came out of it: a generative engine that starts from growth rules — branching, density, light direction — and produces a new composition every time. Bloom 04 is the fourth iteration, the one chosen by the curators to represent the project in the show.

The original brief: a piece that changes every time you look at it.

Objectives & Challenges

A system that generates ever-different compositions from a few simple rules, like a plant growing.

A piece that would hold its own printed two and a half metres tall, and a loop that rewards a longer look without ever repeating.

Process & Approach

The process was more like tending a garden than drawing a poster — we planted rules and watched what grew.

Early prototypes ran for days on a loop, and we selected variants the way you'd select a photograph from a contact sheet — by instinct first, structure second. Working closely with the curators, we tuned the growth parameters until the piece felt alive at both print resolution and on the gallery's projected loop, checking prints and screen side by side at every stage.

Visual Solution

The system is built on a small set of growth rules inspired by botany.

Every branch decides where to fork based on available space and a light gradient, never on pure chance. Those rules give rise to thousands of possible variants — Bloom 04 is the one where the structure opened up the most. For the gallery loop we slowed the engine down until every branching became visible: a six-minute cycle that never repeats identically.

Results & Feedback

A poster that never quite finishes being the same one, hung two and a half metres tall in the show.

Bloom 04 was printed at 150×200 cm and shown alongside the video loop projected on the opposite wall. Visitors could generate their own variant from an interactive station next to the piece, and the series was later released as a limited edition of numbered prints.
